Backend Engineer

About the role

ING is looking for a Senior Backend Engineer to design and develop scalable backend services, APIs and cloud‑native platforms for its digital asset and distributed financial infrastructure initiatives.

Key responsibilities

• Design, build and operate microservice‑based applications on cloud‑native platforms, ensuring high availability, security and resilience.
• Develop integration solutions between internal banking systems and emerging digital‑asset platforms, supporting transaction workflows, settlement and custody.
• Participate in architecture discussions on scalability, performance, security and maintainability.
• Build automated testing frameworks, CI/CD pipelines and improve observability, monitoring and incident resolution.

Required profile

• 5+ years of software engineering, solution design or architecture experience.
• Strong stakeholder management and excellent communication skills in English (C1 level or above).
• Experience working in Agile environments and a Bachelor’s degree in Computer/Software Engineering or related field.

Required skills

• Java (preferred) and Kotlin.
• Spring Boot, REST APIs and Microservices Architecture.
• Event‑driven architectures using Kafka, RabbitMQ or similar.
• SQL and NoSQL databases.
• Containerisation (Docker) and orchestration (Kubernetes).
• CI/CD pipelines, Git‑based development workflows.
