Associate Professor in Snow Science and Avalanches (3‑year fixed term)

About the role

The Department of Geosciences at UiT the Arctic University of Norway seeks a three‑year fixed‑term Associate Professor specializing in snow science and avalanches. The position is part of the Solid Earth Science, Mineral Resources and Geohazards group and is based in Tromsø, an Arctic city offering extensive field opportunities.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct independent research on snow avalanches and related geohazards, complementing existing group strengths.
• Teach and supervise undergraduate and graduate students, developing curricula and assessment.
• Secure external research funding and contribute to departmental strategic development.
• Engage with stakeholders, public audiences and interdisciplinary collaborations.

Required profile

• PhD in geosciences, physics, mathematics or a closely related field.
• Documented publication record in snow science and/or geohazards.
• Experience with field‑based research in snowy terrain.
• Demonstrated pedagogical competence or willingness to acquire it within two years.
• Proficiency in English and a Scandinavian language at CEFR B2 level (or commitment to achieve it within three years).
