Operations Research Software Developer

About the role

The Operations Research (OR) team builds mathematical optimization models and decision support solutions. This role takes those solutions from prototype to production: designing integrations with data sources, moving applications through test, UAT and production, and managing architecture and information security. It is mostly software engineering, systems integration and IT processes, bridging the OR team and IT teams. Introductory knowledge of optimization is expected but not expertise.

Key responsibilities

• Design and develop integrations between optimization applications and enterprise systems (REST APIs, web services, direct database connections, file-based integration)
• Build services that pull data from sources such as the flight information system and deliver model outputs via APIs, databases or user interfaces
• Apply architecture patterns so long-running optimization jobs are triggered, monitored and completed reliably
• Set up development, test, UAT and production environments and move applications between them
• Meet logging, monitoring, error handling and maintainability requirements
• Track performance, scalability and availability of production applications
• Handle optimization tool licensing and configuration, or coordinate it with infrastructure teams
• Define infrastructure requirements and contribute to IT/solution architecture design and reviews
• Assess information security requirements and ensure authentication, authorization and access permissions are handled properly
• Standardize solutions across projects and work with OR scientists to make models production-ready

Required profile

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, Industrial Engineering or a related field
• 4-7 years of experience in backend development, APIs and systems integration (strong production experience with 3 years may also be considered)
• Experience designing REST APIs/web services, deploying applications on Linux and Windows Server, and using Git
• Openness to learning about mathematical optimization solutions

Required skills

• Strong skills in at least one backend language and working proficiency in Python
• SQL and relational databases
• Basic knowledge of authentication, authorization and service security
• Familiarity with logging and monitoring approaches
• Nice to have: LP/MIP concepts, Gurobi/CPLEX/Pyomo, Docker/Kubernetes/CI/CD, microservices and message queues, cloud environments, aviation or operations management background, Java or C#
