Senior Backend Engineer – Remote

About the role

We are looking for a senior backend engineer to own and evolve our production backend systems for Mode’s EarnPhone platform. The role is fully remote and involves collaborating with product, design, data and frontend teams to deliver high‑scale features.

Key responsibilities

• Design, build and scale core services, APIs and micro‑services supporting user workflows, notifications and automation.
• Maintain and improve observability, monitoring, logging, testing and alerting for high‑volume data and event‑driven architectures.
• Identify performance bottlenecks, optimise PostgreSQL queries and Sidekiq job processing, and ensure system reliability and uptime.
• Integrate third‑party services (e.g., Stripe, AWS, SQS) and develop resilient asynchronous data flows.
• Participate in 2‑week sprint cycles, code reviews and architecture reviews while adhering to CI/CD best practices.

Required profile

• 6+ years of backend engineering experience, with at least 2 years in a senior role.
• Proven ownership of production Ruby on Rails services and deep knowledge of PostgreSQL.
• Strong debugging skills, ability to work with incomplete documentation and resolve production incidents.
• Experience building distributed, event‑driven systems and integrating external APIs.
