Associate Professor in Snow Science and Avalanches (3‑year fixed term)

About the role

The Department of Geosciences at UiT the Arctic University of Norway seeks a three‑year fixed‑term Associate Professor to strengthen its snow science and avalanche research portfolio. The position is based in Tromsø, an Arctic city offering unique field‑work opportunities.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct high‑quality research in snow science, avalanches and related geohazards, including interdisciplinary projects.
• Teach undergraduate and graduate courses and supervise MSc and PhD students, achieving basic pedagogical competence within two years.
• Develop external networks, represent the department at conferences, and engage in public outreach and media enquiries.
• Collaborate with colleagues to secure external funding and help establish a permanent snow‑science capability at UiT.

Required profile

• PhD in geosciences, physics, mathematics or a closely related field with a documented publication record in snow science or geohazards.
• Experience in field‑based research in snowy terrain and a strong dedication to field work.
• Ability to communicate effectively in English; proficiency in a Scandinavian language (B2 CEFR) required within three years.
• Documented basic pedagogical competence or willingness to acquire it within two years.
• Collegial team player with strong networking and communication skills.
