Blockchain Backend Engineer

About the role

ING is seeking a Senior Backend Engineer to design and develop scalable backend services, APIs and cloud‑native platforms that support digital asset, tokenization and distributed ledger initiatives. The role focuses on building resilient, secure, high‑performing distributed systems while offering the opportunity to work on blockchain‑related projects.

Key responsibilities

• Design, build and operate scalable backend services and APIs on cloud‑native platforms.
• Develop microservice‑based applications, integration solutions and event‑driven architectures.
• Support distributed financial platforms, digital‑asset workflows, settlement and custody integrations.
• Participate in architecture discussions covering scalability, performance, security and reliability.
• Implement automated testing, CI/CD pipelines and improve observability, monitoring and operational resilience.
• Collaborate with global ING teams, product owners, security specialists and blockchain engineers.

Required profile

• 5+ years of software engineering, solution design or architecture experience.
• Strong stakeholder management and excellent communication skills.
• Analytical problem‑solving abilities and experience working in Agile environments.
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Engineering, Software Engineering or related field.
• Fluent English (C1 level or above).

Required skills

• Java (preferred) and Kotlin.
• Spring Boot, REST APIs and Microservices Architecture.
• Event‑driven architectures using Kafka, RabbitMQ or similar.
• SQL and NoSQL databases.
• Containerisation with Docker and orchestration with Kubernetes.
• CI/CD pipelines, Git‑based development workflows.
